During the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend, the IU Indianapolis Sports Innovation Institute, in conjunction with the School of Informatics, presented a panel on Sports Analytics featuring recent alumni working in the sport industry. Four graduates joined us to discuss how they got their job in sports analytics, what the industry looks like in terms of jobs, and they discussed their time at IU Indianapolis studying sports analytics.
The intention of this special issue of Sports Innovation Journal is to support academic discourse regarding engaged learning practices in sport, tourism, and live entertainment education. As a result, this work encourages thought and dialogue related to innovative practices, academic investigation, and conversations around both theory and practice to better serve all students and move these fields forward.

Sport management is not an academic discipline or profession that many associate with the field of design. However, over the past 7 years, I have used design thinking as the set of mindsets and methods in my senior capstone class in sport management at Indiana University Indianapolis.
The IUPUI Sports Innovation Institute and the Center for Sports Transformation in Indianapolis partnered to create an innovative solution that will build local sports leadership capacity to create health sport communities. Dr. Wade Gilbert from Cal State-Fresno, Mike Mossbrucker from Mooresville High School, and Dr. David Pierce from the IUPUI Sports Innovation Institute talked about their collaborative effort to build leaders within the sport community in Mooresville, Indiana.
Mike Karnuta, Senior Vice President of Business Development for the Indiana Sports Corporation, believes in the mission of IU Indianapolis’ Department of Tourism, Events, and Sports Management (TESM).
Karnuta works with a variety of faculty and students to stage mock interviews, teach adjunct courses, volunteer as a career panelist, create opportunities for graduate assistants and interns, guest lecture, and more. He also leads the department’s advisory council, lending expertise to branding, recruitment, and curriculum relevancy. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship–one that results in networking and service learning for students while helping Indiana Sports Corp stage world-class events.
“Indianapolis is known nationally as one of the best host cities for major sporting events,” notes Karnuta. “With frequency, IU Indianapolis [TESM] students through their volunteerism and commitment, have helped Indiana Sports Corp successfully host some of the biggest and best sporting events in the world.”
In Karnuta’s advisory council chair role, he works with other community sports leaders to help create unique and engaging learning experiences for TESM’s sports management and other students. These opportunities are designed to position TESM students above job-market competitors when they graduate.
“Because of Indianapolis’ current sports event pipeline,” Karnuta says, “the opportunities for IU Indianapolis students to connect, serve, and gain valuable experience as a volunteer, is not just compelling, but endless! The future has never been brighter, and the smart students will take advantage of what is within their grasp.”

The Sports Innovation Institute has an ongoing partnership and collaboration with the Center for Sports Transformation, based in Indianapolis, to work in communities across Indiana to create healthier youth sports ecosystems by the youth sports leadership capacity in communities using the principles of long-term program development (LTPD). Dr. Pierce embedded a research team in Mooresville, IN in 2022-23 to work with youth sports and high school athletics leadership to create the Mooresville Youth Sports Alliance. The CST is currently working on building out a sustainable non-profit organizational model through philanthropic and grant support.
Host Dr. Geoffre Sherman is joined by Dr. James Johnson, Professor of Sport Administration at Ball State University, and Dr. David Pierce, Professor of Sport Management at IUPUI.
Big changes are coming to IUPUI! In August of 2022, it was announced that the campus would be rebranding to IU Indianapolis, and that the Purdue would no longer be offering courses on the campus. In the midst of these changes, the university is working to create a new image for itself and deepen its roots in the city of Indianapolis. In light of the IUI rebranding news, IUPUI sports management students enrolled in their senior capstone consulting class during the Spring 2023 semester were tasked with being leaders in the reimagining of how an athletic department engages with the campus population and builds a dedicated following. The Sports Innovation Institute has partnered with the Center for Sports Transformation since January 2022 on a wide variety of initiatives to support and build the sports leadership capacity in communities at all levels of youth sports using the long-term program development model (LTPD) framework. One of our first projects was to examine the durability of high school athletic directors in the state of Indiana. Our sports data analytics students, led by Kshaun Kapoor, collected and analyzed data on athletic director turnover.
The objective of the survival analysis is to ascertain the average tenure of athletic directors and the factors that had a significant impact on their tenure.
Host Dr. Geoffre Sherman is joined by Dr. Tim Koba, Assistant Professor of Sport Management from High Point University in North Carolina. In this episode, Dr. Koba shares his expertise on how private businesses and startups in the sports industry attract investors, raise funds, and make an exit (which is investors see their financial return).
