Apple Office Hours – January 15 & 16

IT colleagues: 

Apple invites you to attend an Office Hour session on either Wednesday, January 15 at 2pm EST or Thursday, January 16 at 12pm EST.  

The sessions will cover the same material and are being made available to all higher education clients; these are not exclusive to IU. 

The month’s sessions will dive into Apple Intelligence. We’ll learn how to run AI workloads on powerful devices, explore the productivity features that users have access to, and discover the custom development opportunities that Apple Intelligence offers. We’ll also share the story of how Apple Intelligence is being used in real-world settings and show off some cool demos. 

We’ll focus on the topic above for the first 60 minutes, and we’ll all stick around for an additional 30 minutes to field questions on any Apple-related topics.

EdCert Spring 2025 Schedule Now Available

IT colleagues: 

The spring 2025 IT Training Education Certification Program (EdCert) schedule is open for registration.  

All courses meet 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time. 

The course offerings this spring are: 

CompTIA Network+ – January 27–31 

This course validates the skills needed to establish, maintain, and troubleshoot essential business networks securely. Unlike vendor-specific certifications, it prepares candidates to support networks on any platform and covers the precise skills needed in today’s networking environments. This course helps prepare for the CompTIA Network+ certification exam (N10-008). 

Register by January 20 

CompTIA DataSys+ – February 10–14 

This course covers essential skills for managing and securing data systems. It includes database design, deployment, management, and security, as well as scripting and programming fundamentals. The course prepares candidates to handle data administration tasks, ensure business continuity, and comply with governance and regulatory requirements. This course helps prepare for the CompTIA DataSys+ certification exam (DS0-001).

Register by Feb 3 

CompTIA A+ Core2 – February 24–28 

CompTIA A+ is the preferred credential for technical support and IT operations roles, covering more than PC repair. It prepares candidates to troubleshoot and solve a wide range of issues, from networking and operating systems to mobile devices and security. The A+ Core 2 exam focuses on installing and configuring operating systems, security, software troubleshooting, and operational procedures. This vendor-neutral course helps prepare for the CompTIA A+ Core 2 certification exam (220-1102), one of two exams required for certification.

Register by Feb 17 

CompTIA PenTest+ – March 10–14 

This course is for IT professionals aiming to develop penetration testing skills to identify and remediate information-system vulnerabilities. It covers general concepts and methodologies, planning and scoping assessments, legal and compliance requirements, vulnerability scanning, penetration testing, data analysis, and reporting. This course helps prepare for the CompTIA PenTest+ PT0-002 certification exam. 

Register by March 3 

Configuring Windows Server Hybrid Advanced Series – March 24–28 

This course teaches IT professionals to configure advanced Windows Server services using on-premises, hybrid, and cloud technologies. Skills include leveraging Azure’s hybrid capabilities, migrating workloads to Azure IaaS, securing Azure VMs, and performing high availability, troubleshooting, and disaster recovery tasks. Key tools include Windows Admin Center, PowerShell, Azure Arc, Azure Automation Update Management, Microsoft Defender for Identity, Azure Security Center, Azure Migrate, and Azure Monitor. This course also helps prepare for the AZ-801 certification exam. 

Register by March 17 

CompTIA SecurityX (formerly CASP+) – May 19–23 

This course covers advanced security skills in various environments, governance, risk, and compliance, and leading technical teams. It prepares candidates to architect and implement secure solutions, support ongoing security operations, apply security practices across different infrastructures, and consider governance, risk, and compliance impacts. This course helps prepare for the CompTIA SecurityX (CAS-005) certification exam. 

Register by May 12 

CompTIA Server+ – June 2–6 

The CompTIA Server+ course builds on your professional experience to enhance skills for administering network servers in data center or cloud environments. It covers the latest server technologies, including virtualization, security, and network-attached storage. Key skills include server architecture, administration, storage, security, networking, troubleshooting, and disaster recovery. This course helps prepare for the Server+ SK0-005 certification exam. 

Register by May 26 

Microsoft Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals – June 24 

This course provides foundational knowledge on security, compliance, and identity concepts across cloud-based Microsoft services. It covers the capabilities of Microsoft Entra, security solutions, and compliance solutions. This course helps prepare students for the SC-900 certification exam. 

Register by June 16 

Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals – June 26 

This course teaches the business value and capabilities of Power Platform. You’ll create Power Apps, connect data with Dataverse, build a Power BI Dashboard, automate processes with Power Automate, and build a chatbot with Power Virtual Agents. Skills gained include understanding Power Platform components, Microsoft Dataverse, Connectors, AI Builder, cross-cloud scenarios, and implementing simple solutions with Power Platform tools. 

Register by June 18

Mail-disabled distribution group impact list

IT colleagues: 

Earlier this month the Exchange Administrators identified a small number of on-premises Active Directory groups that had previously been mail-enabled and then later had that functionality disabled. These groups were still mail-enabled in Azure with an unsupported Azure email address. We took steps to remove the Azure mail component to mirror the on-premises AD group where it originates. A list of impacted groups and their object location is available here.

Impacted local IT support groups should review the list to determine if the group is still needed, but no immediate action is required. These groups may still be in use for other services and action should be taken on a case-by-case basis.

How does this happen? 

When an on-premises group is mail-enabled, it syncs to Azure and gets an Azure email address (@indiana.onmicrosoft.com) stamped onto it as a secondary address. When the on-premises group gets disabled, the @exchange.iu.edu address gets removed but Azure retains this secondary address and assigns it as the primary address. This means that when you email that group, it still works, but gets sent from the @indiana.onmicrsoft.com address.

What did the Exchange Admins do? 

After identifying the affected AD Groups, we removed the Azure object without changing the on-premises group. This forced the group to re-sync back to Azure without this secondary email. There should be no impact to any permissions or membership for these groups.

How does this affect your clients? 

In some cases, clients may have been using outdated contacts and sending emails to these pseudo mail-enabled groups. Emails were still being sent out through the Azure-based address, despite the group no longer being mail enabled in Active Directory. These groups will no longer work if you try to send email to them, and clients may encounter issues.

Why does my affected AD Group say [System.Object]? 

In these cases, the problematic email address in Azure has been removed, but an on-premise version of that email address may exist on a different AD group with a mismatched name. For example, this could happen if a group wanted to keep the historical email address, but assigned it to an ACM group when they mail-disabled the original group. Those emails are still in place, but when searching for affected AD groups you will return multiple results. These may need to be resolved on a case-by-case basis by the local IT support.

What are the best practices moving forward? 

We are working with the Tier 2 Desktop, Server, Mobility team to update existing Knowledge Base documentation on this. When a mail-enabled distribution group is no longer needed, the group should either be deleted from Active Directory or Tier 2 should be contacted if the group needs to be disabled so the Azure component may be removed to fully disable the mail component.

C|EH is divided into 20 modules and is delivered through a carefully curated training plan that spans five topics including foot printing and reconnaissance, scanning, enumeration, vulnerability threats, social engineering, SQL injection, and more. This will assist attendees in preparation for the C|EH certification.

On Monday, December 2 at 8am ET, University Endpoint Management Services made a build change to the IU Common Build for macOS, enabling the Jamf Onboarding feature. This change should assist with ease of macOS device builds and future maintenance. More information at the announcement link.

The eLearning Services team would like to make you aware of two upcoming vendor maintenances that will impact a few different Pearson products offered at IU:

    • All Pearson Revel content will be unavailable between 10pm ET on Friday, December 20, and 10am on Saturday, December 21.
    • All Pearson Mastering content will be unavailable from 1am to 9am ET on Saturday, December 21.

Clients may experience issues when accessing Qualtrics at IU between 12am-1am ET on Sunday, December 8, due to scheduled vendor maintenance.

Managed macOS inadvertently locked

IT colleagues: 

The Endpoint Management Services team would like to make you aware that a computer device lock command was inadvertently sent to some Macs managed in the Casper Jamf Pro service. If you receive a report of a macOS device asking for a six-digit unlock code, please assist the client in unlocking the device. 

A list of potentially impacted devices is available here. 

These devices may need to be reassociated with the Jamf Pro management service for proper device management and security. IT administrators should evaluate these Macs to ensure they are up to date for macOS and third-party software. For additional assistance, IT support people should contact Endpoint Management Services at sct2@iu.edu.
