IT Professionals,
UITS administrators are progressing through the migration from Cisco IronPort to Exchange Online Protection. On Wednesday, September 13, we will be retiring external forwarding rules in the IU Messaging Service (MAS) system for accounts that have Exchange mailboxes. Beginning on September 13, these messages will instead be routed to the account’s Exchange mailbox. These accounts will be asked to verify that any rules in MAS are also replicated in Exchange.
We do not expect this to be broadly impactful. Currently, MAS forwarding rules do not work for emails sent from IU Exchange mailboxes to other IU Exchange mailboxes. Therefore, we expect most account owners who wish to have their mail sent to an external address have already configured Exchange forwarding rules to accomplish this. When the MAS rule is retired, the mail will be delivered to the Exchange account where their Exchange forward rules are already running. Refer to prior mailings on the creation of Exchange mailboxes and the KB instructions on mail forwarding in Outlook.
Additionally, please note this change will not impact alumni.iu.edu forwards.
We will be sending a direct communication to affected accounts on August 31, as well as a follow-up email on September 14 notifying them the changes are complete.
For additional questions, contact Tier 2 Support at sct2@iu.edu.

Subject: Exchange mailbox rules for your account(s)
Verify Exchange mailbox forwarding rules are in place by September 13
Hello <name>,
You are receiving this email because you currently have email forwarding rules configured in the IU Email Management system. As part of an ongoing project to improve the security and mail handling processes at IU, administrators will begin removing many of these rules on Wednesday, September 13.
Our records indicate you have the following email forwarding rule(s) configured in Email Management that will be removed:
custom1@iu.edu forwards to custom1@gmail.com
custom2@iupui.edu forwards to custom2@aol.com
custom3@iue.edu forwards to custom3@yahoo.com
custom4@indiana.edu forwards to custom4@comcast.net
To avoid interruption in the forwarding of your email, please verify the forwarding rules listed above have been configured in your Exchange mailbox prior to September 13. You will receive a follow-up email after the forwarding rules have been removed.
If you have immediate questions or concerns, contact your IT Pro or your campus UITS Support Center.
Thank you,
The Identity Management and UITS Support Center teams
