Innovate Indiana among sponsors of tech career fair set for Wednesday in Bloomington

Posted on October 20, 2015 by Bill W. Hornaday

Bloomington Tech Partnership logoA free career and internship fair for persons interested in working in technology-related jobs will be hosted by the Bloomington Technology Partnership from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 21) at the Bloomington/Monroe County Convention Center at 302 S. College Ave.

Representatives of about 20 local companies whose business relates to technology will be at the fair, along with more than 200 registered attendees. The event also is free for non-technical employers who hire technology employees.

Such events carry unprecedented importance within Indiana’s economy as the state faces a “skills gap” in its technology sector. Employers’ demand for workers with technology skills is far outpacing the ability of Indiana’s schools, colleges and universities. Unless this gap begins to shrink in the near future, the state’s economy could suffer as employers turn to other states to fill the demand.

In late June, Innovate Indiana, in conjunction with TechPoint and support from The Lilly Foundation Inc., held a day-long event titled “E2E Convergence: An Education-to-Employment Conversation.” It brought education, technology, economic and workforce officials together to discuss how Indiana can better to meet the growing demand for technically skilled workers statewide.

Addressing this “gap” – and developing better pathways for students into careers – is a major Innovate Indiana initiative. The Bloomington Technology Partnership is a public-private initiative that involves funding from the city of Bloomington and Bloomington Economic Development Corp., as well as Innovate Indiana and Indiana University’s Office of the Vice President for Engagement.
