A protective steel enclosure for motorcycles — targeted for use in parking garages, apartment complexes and university campuses — emerged as the winning pitch at the fourth annual Ideas Solving Social and Economic Challenges (ISSEC) competition hosted by IUPUI’s Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and the Center for Research and Learning.
The concept for SafeBay, produced by three School of Engineering and Technology students — James Rutan, William Pearson and Ed Kello — won the top judges’ prize of $2,500 and the Audience Choice Award of $1,000. The second-place prize of $1,500 went to NeoWarm, a concept to prevent hypothermia in low-weight, premature babies born in limited-resource regions of the world. The third-place prize of $500 went to LIRA Loans, an alternative to high-interest payday loans in which loans are offered for much lower rates for a longer periods of time.
The competition encourages individual students or teams from IUPUI schools and departments to “pitch” new products or ventures. Fifteen finalists were given 3 minutes to present their idea to a panel of judges in an “elevator” format without the aid of slides or props.
