What brought you to the IEP?
I am an English teacher in a public senior high school in Japan, and I wanted to improve my English proficiency level, especially my listening and speaking skills. Additionally, I was curious about living in a foreign country even though it was a short period. When it comes to improving English, I know the east and the west coast of the U.S. have many Japanese, so I thought it would be better to chose the Midwest area, Indiana University. Of course, safety is also an important factor for me to decide on the IEP in Bloomington.
What is your favorite thing about the IEP?
The teachers were very passionate and responsible. They created an environment where students could develop their English skills outside of the classroom, such as by introducing them to Podcasts for professionals, English clubs, and English newspapers, which are weekly newspapers of Indiana University. In class, they checked students’ understanding through their reactions carefully. In terms of evaluation, they gave quizzes when appropriate, diagnosed students’ level of understanding and gave appropriate feedback to us. It was helpful and encouraging for me to continue studying.
What was your favorite class with the IEP?
Difficult question! I like Michael’s clear and concise explanation of English grammar and his small lecture about nature and creatures based on his observation and profound knowledge. In Maddie’s communications class, we had a debate activity, which was fun and exciting for me. I would like to incorporate the debate activity as she did into my teaching. Then, Leslie’s reading class used Indiana University’s newspaper as authentic material to expand our vocabulary and discuss the issues on the paper. Thanks to this activity, I became accustomed to reading longer texts and felt less psychologically burdened.
What do you think about Bloomington, Indiana?
I know only about the area around Indiana University, but it looks like a good community to live. It is quiet and people are friendly.
