Course Description:
The nuclear age began with the first test of an atomic bomb at Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945. Since that fateful day they have only been used twice in warfare, on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This course will explore the significance of nuclear weapons in global politics. Why do states seek to acquire them? What are the principal legal, technical and organizational obstacles to the acquisition of nuclear weapons? Are they the only genuine weapons of mass destruction? If so, why?
