Watch the NACADA Webinar: Incorporating Coaching Conversations into Academic Advising Practice

This webinar features Linnette C. White (IU School of Medicine Lead Advisor, Chair of the NACADA Coaching Community, and IU Coaching Conversations Trainer) and Gail Fairfield (former director of the Coaching Conversations program).

The NACADA webinar explores:

  • The relationship of coaching to advising and how advisors can incorporate coaching principles and practices into common advising conversation topics, as well as how to take coaching conversations deeper with students.
  • Exploring  Meaningful work: using a coaching approach for advisor and student career development.
  • Blending life and executive coaching model for retention and graduation moving from sharing information to developmental growth.

Call for Proposals: 2020 EDGE Conference for Career and Academic Planning

The EDGE Conference is for anyone working in or interested in academic and career planning at IU.  We encourage faculty advisors, career coaches, academic advisors, success coaches, and internship supervisors to join us to learn from colleagues and share ideas.  The conference will include a keynote speaker and multiple concurrent sessions; each session will be 50 minutes long.  Please think of this as YOUR conference and consider flexible options for participating:  

  • Problem-solving sessions 
  • Cross-campus collaborations  
  • Research presentations and papers 
  • Workshops 
  • Working group sessions 
  • Discussions of shared challenges (consider new or experienced advisor/career professional round-tables about professional growth and challenges) 
  • Panels 
  • Group coaching sessions 

Proposals should include: 

  • Name(s), campus(es), and job title(s) of presenter(s) or working group/discussion leaders(s) 
  • Email and phone  
  • Primary contact person for the proposal 
  • Presentation/event title and abstract (150 words or less) describing your event or presentation and what participants will learn or gain from the experience
  • Desired format – please feel free to be very creative and consider flexible options 
  • Any audio/visual/technology needs 
  • Other information that you want us to be aware of, such as presenter accessibility needs, traveling time, etc.

The Coaching Conversations Program is Growing, and Registration is Open!

The Coaching Conversations Program is growing! We are continuing to offer our full schedule of workshops, but we are also in the process of recertifying to provide both a 60-hour Level I program, and a 30-hour Level II program.

Why the expansion to Level II? We developed a lot of material – more than the 60 hours we are certified for. Growing the program allows participants to be recognized for the work they complete, and provides more training hours for those who need it or want it. This change is part of a larger vision to offer continuing education for people who have earned certification, and further hours for people who want certification, but need 120 hours of training.

You might notice some changes:

  • Old Workshops have New Titles: Name changes improve clarity for participants and facilitate the expansion of the program for continuing education in coaching.
  • The order of workshops has changed a little: This won’t hurt you, no matter your stage of completion. You will not lose credit for any workshop you have completed (or the cohort, if you were in the 2018-2019 year). There are specific questions about completion answered down below in the FAQs.

FAQs for Levels I and II

Where are we in the approval process for the new program?

  • It’s a lengthy process to both compile the submission and with lots of reading and reviewing time for CCE, it’s a process we expect to be in for a significant part of spring 2020.
  • They have assured us they work with a program to meet their standards if there are any issues.

I’ve completed up to Day 3/ Coaching Tools, what do I do now?

  • You’re fine to keep going to “old” Day 5/Coaching in Cultural Contexts
  • You might have done “Groups and Classes”; that credit is recorded and not going anywhere.

I’ve completed up to old Day 4/ Self-Management and Decision-Making through Coaching. What do I do now?

  • You are ready for old Day 5/Coaching in Cultural Contexts; old Day 4/Self-Management and Decision-Making through Coaching is recorded and you have credit for it. You can use it as part of the 30 hour training for certification if you need more than 60 hours, or you can include it as part of the 30 hour sequence after certification for continuing education
  • You also might have completed “Groups and Classes”; that credit is recorded. You can use it as part of the 30 hour training for certification if you need more than 60 hours, or you can include it as part of the 30 hour sequence after certification for continuing education

I’ve done the old full 9.5/10 day sequence and cohort; I’m eligible to certify with 60 hours.

  • That’s great! If you are pursuing certification and can certify with 60 hours, you may certify under the old system and leave it there. You may also certify under the new system, and then complete the new thirty-hour training to count toward your continuing education requirements for the certification.

I’ve done the old full 9.5/10 day sequence and have not completed the cohort yet.

  • You may go ahead and complete the cohort under the old system or the new as we transtion.

I’ve done most of the old full 9.5/10 day sequence and need either Leadership or Groups and Classes to complete the old 60 hours. Can I still take it?

  • Yes! Just register and follow up with an email to kegoldst@iu.edu to let me know.

Learn how to train student workers in coaching mindsets and techniques

Are you looking for new tools to help train your student workers in coaching skills like listening, setting boundaries, and building rapport? There is a special event for the supervisors of peer mentors/peer coaches who would like to bring coaching models into training their supervisees. The workshop will reference useful models for student engagement, including appreciative mentoring and academic coaching (from IU’s Coaching Conversations program). While there will be some instruction in concepts, this workshop primarily focuses on translating concepts and resources into accessible ideas and practices for student staff. Participants will have time to work with others and independently on evaluating needs in their current training program, developing a plan to incorporate coaching resources, and framing coaching resources accessibly for undergraduate employees. The last hour is reserved for optional consulting with the leaders in 15 minute blocks to discuss any questions or strategies to move your plans forward.

Coaching Days One & Two at IU East in August!

For anyone interested in Coaching Days 1 & 2, we have a new opportunity available this August 13-14 at IU East. Coaching Days 1 & 2 will introduce participants to all of the fundamental skills of coaching. At the end of the second day, participants will be able to use coaching techniques with students in a variety of situations, such as career appointments, office hours, drop-in advising, and any time a student may need to talk out a decision or explore options.

This two-day workshop may interest members of the IU East campus who would like to learn coaching techniques on their home campus, as well as faculty and staff from other campuses interested in Coaching Days 1 & 2  (especially those who have conflicts with September events at IUPUI and IU Bloomington). Register on the OCSS website if you are interested. The IU East School of Nursing  and Health Sciences is providing lunch for all participants.

Coaching Conversations Workshop Dates for Fall 2019

Registration is open for late summer and fall 2019 Coaching Conversations Workshops. Beginners can start with Days 1&2, a two day introductory series on the fundamentals of coaching theory and practice. Maybe you’ve had Days 1&2, but you would like a refresher before moving on to Day 3; please feel free to take them again. Advanced coaches will see some higher level options (leadership, professionalism, Day 5) available in August.

Please note that Coaching Communication (formerly Coaching in an Academic Advising Practice) is now a full-day session. This workshop will teach you to use coaching practices for outreach and written communication. You will also learn how to communicate effectively about coaching through observation, discussion, and both giving and receiving feedback.

Interested in becoming a Board Certified Coach? Come to a Cohort Kick-Off meeting July 22, 9:30 AM-3:30 PM at IUB in the Indiana Memorial Union, Maple Room OR July 25, 9:30 AM-3:30 PM at IUPUI University Library, Room 1126. We are beginning a new cycle of cohorts, and for people interested in seeking the Board Certified Coach credential through the Center for Credentialing and Education, consider joining a certification cohort to become a board certified coach. For those who have been through the cohort experience, consider applying to be a coach trainer.

  • After the first year, we’ve made some title and curriculum updates. Over the summer, you will see these title updates reflected in Canvas.
  • There will be no “loss” of progress for anyone completing the current curriculum (think: bulletin year). Stay tuned for further information over the summer!

Welcome to the Coaching Conversations Blog

The Indiana University Coaching Conversations program is entering its second year! We have accomplished a great deal in the first full year of our expanded programming. The 2018-2019 academic year has been a time of growth and transition, from Gail Fairfield fearlessly piloting the coaching program as the sole trainer, to her mentoring 11 new trainers who will move the program forward. Gail and OCSS also submitted the Coaching Conversations Program design to the Center for Credentialing and Education before her official retirement in August, and it was approved by the Center to count towards the Board Certified Coach credential. Gail and Kate Goldstein collaboratively restructured some parts of the program this June, and Kate is at the helm of the Coaching Conversations program moving forward.

 

Accomplishments

  • We have had over 400 unique participants in the program so far, spanning Gail’s first workshops to our most recent in June 2019.
  • We have 11 trainers delivering workshops and will be accepting new trainer applicants this summer (our next blog post).
  • We have 50 participants in our first coaching cohort – an optional program for people interested in becoming Board Certified Coaches through the Center for Credentialing and Education – and will be accepting new certification-seekers this summer (our next post).
  • By June 17, 2019, we anticipate a TOTAL Coaching Conversations unique event attendance count of 1,167.
