The film industry is a tough business to break into, even tougher for women. So how did a young woman born in Omaha, Nebraska and raised in New Mexico make it in Hollywood without any connections? In a word, grit.

Producer/writer Kristin Hahn will share her experiences Nov. 13 at the IU Cinema after the 7 p.m. screening of Tumbledown, the first project from her new Hahnscape Entertainment production company. She also will lead a master class on women in film and business from 3-4 p.m. that day. (Seating is limited to 25; email jsdonlon@indiana.edu to reserve a spot.)
In this interview, Hahn talks about what it’s like to be a woman behind the scenes in Hollywood and what advice she’d give to young women and entrepreneurs in general. (more…)

On November 9th, IU Cinema will screen a rare 35mm print of The Simple-Minded Murderer, my choice for the series Staff Selects. The last time I saw this film was in 1984, which was my first year as projectionist at the Roxie Theatre in San Francisco.

During the early eighties, arthouse cinemas in major cities across the U.S. were struggling to keep their doors open amidst competition from a new phenomenon: video rental stores. Patrons had to be lured back into the cinematic experience by innovative programming which included new and highly acclaimed international films. (more…)

Spending Christmas with Deanna Durbin on Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner, which means it’s time to pull out all of my favorite spooky films. Being a scaredy cat, though, means that my definition of “spooky” is probably vastly different than most people’s. When it comes to Halloween, I turn to film noir, Universal horror classics, Tim Burton, and horror comedies like The Ghost Breakers. One of my most loved films for this holiday is Lady on a Train, a 1945 genre hybrid starring Deanna Durbin.

This probably seems like a weird choice, especially if you know who Durbin was. An operatic songstress with a sweet disposition, Durbin practically kept Universal Studios afloat for the entirety of her brief, stellar career. Breezy musicals were her specialty as they spotlighted her vivacious, feisty, and playful persona perfectly. Durbin could also excel at more dramatic fare, though, and Lady on a Train may be the best mixture of the woman’s talents. (more…)

Hail to the King, Baby: Bruce Campbell and Bubba Ho-Tep

I think it’s safe to say that at this point Bruce Campbell has gone beyond nerd and fanboy cult icon to THE living cult icon. To put it in terms for the modern reader: he is the original Nathan Fillion, an almost cartoonishly handsome square-jawed lothario type that had something classic and “Old Hollywood” about him. He would always seem to pop up on every fan-casted project involving any sort of archetypal leading man, but was too under the radar to afford someone like Harrison Ford. However, with a current 119 acting credits to his name (according to IMDb), Bruce Campbell is a man who seemingly never wanted for work, mostly due to his decision to solidify himself as the go-to B-movie and television actor. If you look through his exhausting list of credits you’ll see everything from cult horror movies like Maniac Cop and Mindwarp; recurring and regular roles on television shows like The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., Xena: Warrior Princess, Ellen; and due to his relationship with directors Sam Raimi and the Coen Brothers he even pops up in blockbusters like the Spider-Man series or the zany The Hudsucker Proxy. A Conversation About Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archive

The Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archive (IULMIA) has been preserving and digitizing, restoring, archiving, acquiring material, and working with researchers for years now. At the beginning of last summer, IULMIA moved to its new space in Wells Library; alongside the library’s Media Services and the Black Film Center/Archive there are now spaces (through the Moving Image Archive and Collections space) for archival work and on-site research, as well as a brand new Screening Room, all meant to expand the possibilities for studying media at IU. From its beginnings in an old bowling alley to its new space on the library’s Ground Floor, this incredible IU and international resource has grown into what Rachael Stoeltje, the IULMIA Director, calls “a proper archive.”
