What is equitable literacy instruction? Equitable literacy instruction is comprised of instructional practices that support all children to achieve high outcomes regardless of ability, race, or any other marginalized identity. Our extensive literature review identified 6 equitable foundational principles that provide the necessary classroom infrastructure for implementing effective equitable literacy instruction in Preschool to 3rd grade. These six principles include:
1) Inclusive Environments,
2) Universal Design for Learning (UDL),
3) Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS),
4) Culturally Responsive Pedagogy,
5) Emergent Bilingual Support, and
6) Family Engagement.
These foundational principles ensure that ALL children and families are welcomed, represented, fully included, individually supported, and celebrated in the classroom. Watch for follow-up blog posts that address each of these foundational principles and include additional resources. Also, Lynne Hall and Lauren Padesky, staff at The Early Childhood Center (ECC) at Indiana University’s Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, will be offering an overview webinar of these six principles as part of an Academic Impact Webinar Series. The Foundational Principles webinar will share a broad overview that introduces the six foundational principles (identified above) followed by instructional practice webinars that include how to incorporate each foundational principle within your classroom context.
