Please join us for another great Pop-Up University Lecture on Thursday, November 18! Dr. Deborah Marr, Associate Professor of Biology, will be presenting “Seeing the Forest for the Trees: Exploring old growth forests in Northern Indiana.”
We will take a step back in time – old growth forests contain trees that are 200 to 500+ years old. These forests are rare in Indiana and notable for the size of the trees (some over 3 feet in diameter). We will explore the history of forests in Indiana, and in particular focus on Bendix Woods Nature Preserve. In October 2021, we completed a survey of trees in the Nature Preserve (over 20,000 trees) that builds on surveys that were done in the 1960s and 1980s. The 50 years of data allows us to track how forests are changing over time, think about effects of climate change, and “see” what is dynamic and what is stable in these ancient forests.
