Join us and the IU South Bend Accessible Educational Services office for a new exhibition of works by local community and IU South Bend student artists who identify with physical and/or cognitive disabilities.
South Bend’s Engman Public Natatorium not only denied entry to African Americans for almost thirty years, it never had a ramp. That omission had a huge impact on those who employ different forms of mobility.
With the “Ability” exhibition, we look to draw connections between racism and ableism and show how movements for disability rights often took inspiration from movements for racial justice. “Ability 4” shows how every individual is able to fully explore the world and deserves paths to share their experiences.
The exhibition opens with a public reception on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, from 6 to 7:30 pm. After a chance for guests to view and explore the works on display, the artists will speak briefly about their pieces. Light refreshments will be available.
This opening event is in-person only. Can’t make the opening event? The exhibition will remain on view through November 15, 2024.
This activity was made possible, in part, with support from the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County.
