The strength of South Bend, Indiana’s African American community comes to life through stories of the places where history was made and the people who helped make it.
Placing History offers the most comprehensively researched account of South Bend’s African American history, drawing from over 2,500 newspaper articles, oral histories collected by the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center, and other newly uncovered sources.
On Tuesday, July 11, we officially launch this last chapter in our revamped African American Landmark Tour with in-depth histories of ten sites that made local history including Linden School, Olivet A.M.E. Church, ‘The Lake,’ and the Engman Public Natatorium.
Join us in-person or online to learn how you and others can get their own free physical or e-book copy (in-person attendees can get one that evening). We’ll also hear fuller versions of some of the oral histories that were quoted in the book and helped shape its development. You’ll also have a chance to share or listen to more stories from community members.
It’s an evening meant to share and celebrate local history.
This free event is offered in-person or online. No RSVP is required. We ask only one physical book per person so our limited supply can be shared as widely as possible.
