Join us to learn how to adjust writing assignments in response to Chat GPT and other AI tools. According to John Warner, “ChatGPT is not a threat to anything that is worth preserving, and we should instead be viewing this as an opportunity to re-examine what we ask students to do when they write in school contexts.” Warner values what students learn from the process of writing, not the formulaic product privileged in many school settings. But what does this process approach to writing look like in practice? How can we design assignments with process in mind? How can generative AI, like Chat GPT, help us rethink our approach to writing?
During this workshop, we will briefly recap the possibilities and constraints of generative AI in relation to designing writing assignments. We will then spend the bulk of our time in breakout rooms workshopping assignments with the goals of matching assignments to measurable outcomes, emphasizing the writing process, and communicating expectations to students in a transparent way.
Participants are invited to bring a writing assignment to share and workshop. Participants will leave the session with concrete ways to redesign writing projects as well as a template for reviewing their assignments with colleagues and students.
