Join the Civil Rights Heritage Center as we honor local history with a relaunch of our celebrated local history tour.
In 2013, the IU South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center launched the city’s first African American Landmark Tour. The celebrated tour gathered seventeen sites to tell some of the broad experiences lived by African American people in South Bend, Indiana. From churches to neighborhoods to schools and sites of political and social gathering, the tour honors local history by highlighting some of the many places where that history was made.
On September 24, we relaunch this incredible project that celebrates and widely shares local Black history.
After gathering to hear from some IU and community leaders, we’ll officially launch the new version of the tour with a sign unveiling. Next, a charter bus will take guests (RSVP required for this portion) along the tour with CRHC Assistant Director and Curator George Garner sharing local stories along the way.
The updated tour features all new signs at each location, a new website, and a curriculum for K-12 educators to use in classes. A print and e-book with in-depth histories of many of the sites will launch in May 2023.
Join us for this moment of celebration and a chance to learn more about South Bend’s African American history.

This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
