You may have heard that, per an Indiana law, all courses need to have their syllabi posted publicly online. IU is currently onboarding CourseLeaf (a new software for curriculum, catalog, and syllabi management) which will pull information directly from the Canvas Syllabus page. But you will need to post (and publish!) material in the Syllabus tool for that to happen.
Your representatives on the UFC recommend that the syllabi to be shared publicly via Courseleaf include seven elements:
- Course Title/Course Number/Section Number
- Course Description (from the bulletin)
- Course Student Learning Outcomes
- Grading weights/scales
- Course modality
- Meeting dates (days/times or start/end dates if asynchronous)
- Due dates for major assignments/exams
Since this information will be shared and freely available on the web, please be careful to remove extraneous details from the text you post in the Syllabus tool, such as personal contact information (e.g., personal phone or email) and any virtual meeting links (for Zoom, Teams, etc.). Removing virtual meeting links is especially important to keep student enrollment information private. You may keep those things in the syllabus, as well as all the other things you normally include.
Please remember to publish your Canvas page seven days before your course(s) start, and feel free to drop a line to UCET@iu.edu for any assistance, questions, or advice. Or just if you are feeling you would like to vent. We are here to help you. You can get an individualized consult, a helping hand, or an entire workshop delivered to your department.
