Indiana University Human Resources is launching Leading at IU: People Leaders this spring and encourages you to apply for the seven-session leadership series, which targets leaders of individual contributors or small teams in campus/university administration, schools, units, and divisions.
Offered as a cohort approach, People Leaders focuses on the essential leadership elements to lead a team at Indiana University. Kicking off in January, the series will run for seven months and will meet virtually. Using a flipped classroom approach, each session will include facilitated conversations around leadership best practices using materials and tools from a variety of vetted resources, including Gallup and Zenger Folkman. Each topic will also offer virtual small group sessions designed for additional discussion and application; these small group sessions will be run by members of the group and will be scheduled by the group members each month.
How is this series structured?
From January to July 2025, this series will cover seven topics based on Gallup’s essential leadership skills. Each month, there will be 2 sessions:
- Session #1 will be with the cohort, lasting 2 hours from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
- Session #2 will be with your small group, lasting 1 hour. Small group session dates will be determined by each small group.

- January 29 – Build relationships. Establish connections with others to build trust, share ideas, and accomplish work.
- February 26 – Develop people. Help others become more effective through strengths development, clear expectations, encouragement, and coaching.
- March 26 – Lead change. Recognize that change is essential, set goals for change, and lead purposeful efforts to adapt work that aligns with the stated vision.
- April 23 – Inspire others. Encourage others through positivity, vision, confidence, challenge, and recognition.
- May 28 – Think critically. Seek information, critically evaluate the information, apply the knowledge gained, and solve problems.
- June 25 – Communicate clearly. Listen, share information concisely and with purpose, and be open to hearing opinions.
- July 23 – Create accountability. Identify the consequences of actions and hold yourself and others responsible for performance.
