Development Conversations
Development Conversations help leaders and employees discuss individual development goals that support the employee’s current role and future career goals. These conversations can help employees build strengths and competencies and develop a career path.
Development Conversation Guide
Performance at IU provides a guide that gives leaders and employees a framework to discuss development goals. It features prepared questions to spur conversations about development.

Prior to the meeting
- Leaders schedule a 60-minute meeting, depending on the goals of the conversation. The conversation should happen one to two times a year.
- Leaders and employees can use the conversation guide to prepare for their meeting. Employees can also use tools and resources available at the Career Planning at IU websiteto help them reflect and prepare.
During the conversation
- This two-way conversation is an opportunity to identify development opportunities, discuss career and development goals, and prepare an action plan. Development Conversations are a great tool to ensure that development is individualized, intentional, and ongoing (Gallup Q06).
Following the conversation
- Leaders help employees achieve their development goals by implementing next steps, checking in on progress (Check-In Conversationsare a great way to do this), and providing feedback.
