Faculty are required to “clearly explain to students which outside resources or other assistance may or may not be used on any examination, assignment, curricular or academic-related activity,” and this includes the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). The IU GenAI Task Force Report recommended that “acceptable GenAI usage should be clearly defined in syllabi, engaging students on both the benefits and drawbacks of using it for learning purposes in the course.” UCET has put together some model syllabus statements that can be adapted to your course, whether you want to allow the use of AI all the time, sometimes, or never.
In short, be transparent about YOUR policies for the class and each assignment because students are getting different rules from every instructor they encounter.
