The IU South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center is working with the Studebaker National Museum to record stories and help others learn more about this important part of Studebaker’s South Bend’s history.
For thousands of African American people in South Bend, Studebaker was more than a source of employment. As tens of thousands of African American people moved from the South to South Bend in the first half of the twentieth century, Studebaker and South Bend were forever impacted.
Are you related to someone who worked for Studebaker? How has your life today been impacted by this company? Do you know a person of color who worked at the factory? We’re interested in a wide range of stories from African Americans and their descendants that tells a bigger story about Studebaker’s legacy.
If you are or know someone whose story can help, go to https://go.iu.edu/StudebakerStories to learn more about this initiative and let us know.
