Learn how the U.S. military built fake towns to practice violent quelling of uprisings during the 1960s.
The 1960s (like 2020) saw frustrations about systemic racism boil into violent uprisings in hundreds of cities (including South Bend). Under President Richard Nixon, the U.S. Army built model towns called “Riotsvilles” where military and police were trained to respond to civil disorders using violent tactics.
Recovering an obscured history whose effects have shaped the present, “Riotsville, U.S.A.” is a poetic and furious reflection on the rebellions of the 1960s—and the machine that worked to destroy them.
Join us as we present this compelling film and discuss the implications of both the recent and historic uprisings, as well as state responses to them.
