Join us and the IU South Bend Office of Disability Support Services as we open a new exhibition featuring works by local community and IU South Bend student artists who self-identify as living with forms physical and/or cognitive disabilities.
The Engman Public Natatorium—the City of South Bend’s first municipal swimming pool—not only denied entry to African Americans for almost thirty years, but it never had a ramp. That omission had a huge impact on those who employ different forms of mobility. With “Ability,” we look to draw connections between racism and ableism, and how movements for disability rights often took inspiration from movements for racial justice.
“Ability 3” shows how every individual is able to fully explore the world and deserves paths to share their experiences.
The exhibition opens with a public reception on March 9, 2023, from 6 to 7:30 pm. After a chance for guests to view and explore the works on display, the artists will speak briefly about their pieces. Light refreshments will be available.
This opening event is in-person only. Can’t make the opening event? The exhibition will remain on view through May 26, 2023.
This activity was made possible, in part, with support from the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County.
