Current students: Join our team and have your work contribute to the understanding of local justice movements.
The Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center is looking for a current student to join our small staff. Your work will be varied, but all in service of promoting an understanding of the history of injustice in our city and how various people built resistance movements to combat it.
We exist in the former Engman Public Natatorium built in 1922 as the City of South Bend’s first indoor municipal swimming pool. Despite the word “public” carved into the edifice, for 30 years the people who ran this pool denied entry to African American people.
Out of this space, we bridge the gap between the community and the University and use the history of this building as a launching pad for contemporary conversations about injustice and the experiences of marginalized and oppressed people in South Bend.
