Hear more about a new joint venture that will add children’s books featuring local people onto South Bend’s shelves.
Ripples In The Water–The Barbara V. Brandy Foundation will partner with the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center and Wolfson Press to produce a series of children’s books highlighting the lives and experiences of some of South Bend’s iconic figures. The series will introduce stories to the youth of South Bend with a focus to educate, motivate, and include them in the creation of the artwork published in these books.
The first book of the series is “The Little Girl In The Red Bathing Suit” featuring the story of young Barbara Vance Brandy as she tried to swim in the Engman “Public” Natatorium, only to be denied entry because of the color of her skin.
Join Kenneth L. Brandy—Barbara Brandy’s son—along with representatives of the Civil Rights Heritage Center and Wolfson Press to learn more about how the series will unfold over the course of the coming year.
Most importantly, this is a chance to learn how youth can get involved by submitting hand-drawn illustrations to accompany the story.
Join the launch event online or in-person.
Masks over the mouth and nose are required for both vaccinated and unvaccinated guests.
