The Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center joins the South Bend Heritage and the Martin Luther King Jr. Foundations along with Project Impact to continue a 35-year local tradition.
On Monday, January 18, 2021, join us for the 35th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. This year’s theme is “Chaos or Community: Where Do We Go From Here?”, taken from the last book written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This year’s program will be divided into two parts. The morning program will occur from 9:00 AM-10:15 AM and the panel discussion will follow from 10:30 AM-12:00 PM. Registration at go.iu.edu/MLK2021 provides access to both parts.
Morning Program: 9:00 AM–10:15 AM
This year’s keynote address will be given by Dr. Darryl Heller, Director of the IU South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center. In addition to the Keynote Speech and special performances, the Drum Major for Community Service Award will be presented by the Mayors of Mishawaka and South Bend to individuals and organizations who unselfishly give their time and resources to help improve St. Joseph County.
Panel Discussion: 10:30 AM–12:00 PM
The Panel Discussion will center around identifying and addressing issues of race and inequalities as well as offer strategies to improve and create a stronger and more equitable community. Panelists include Juan Constantino, Director of Development, LaCasa de Amistad, Aladean DeRose, Chief Assistant City Attorney, Jordon Gathers, Deputy Chief of Staff, Mayor’s Office, City of South Bend, Sharon McBride, Executive Director, St. Joseph County Community Corrections DuComb Center and Maggie Gibney McLein, Community Organizer. Moderator is Deb Stanley, Founder of Imani Unidad.
