Known as “The World’s Greatest College Weekend,” the Little 500 is an iconic event that brings together college students for a thrilling bike race at Bill Armstrong Stadium. While it’s a time of excitement and celebration, it’s also crucial to prioritize safety to ensure everyone has a memorable and enjoyable experience. This blog post will discuss essential tips for staying safe during Little 500 weekend.
Pace Yourself
If you choose to drink alcohol during Little 500 week, it is important to make sure you drink responsibly and safely. Just like our bikers, you can pace yourself by alternating alcoholic drinks with water or other non-alcoholic beverages! It is easier to track your drinks when you know exactly what you are consuming, so avoid drinking “Jungle Juice” or other mixtures where you don’t know the alcohol content. If you carry a bag with you or have pockets, consider bringing Naloxone with you just in case someone you know experiences an overdose.
Staying Sober
You don’t have to drink alcohol or use substances to have a fun time! If you choose to attend parties, bring your own non-alcoholic beverages so you can still sip on something without the effects of alcohol. You can even discreetly put it in a different container to maintain your privacy if you don’t want to draw attention to your drinking choices- no one will know the difference! Little 500 is all about the bike race, and you can still enjoy the experience without being under the influence. If bikes and parties aren’t your thing, you can get a group of friends together and go out to eat, watch a movie, or do anything else that brings you joy.
Stay Hydrated
Little 500 can be sunny and HOT, increasing the risk of dehydration and heat-related illness. Combined with alcohol consumption, these risks can increase. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water the days leading up to Little 500, and drinking water during any parties or celebrations. Even if you are not consuming alcohol, it is still crucial for you to be adequately hydrated.
Plan Safe Transportation
Before heading to the race or to parties, plan safe transportation options to and from the place. Utilize (trustworthy) designated drivers, public transportation, or ride-sharing services. When using public transportation, be mindful of other riders and be respectful in the shared space. Under no circumstances should you drive while under the influence of alcohol or other substances. There are many other ways to get to your destination!
Take Breaks and Rest
Amidst all the excitement of the week, remember to take breaks and rest when you need it. Listen to your body’s signals and avoid pushing yourself beyond your limits. It is the greatest college weekend- so remember it! Have fun and stay safe, Hoosiers.
