The summertime is a great time that provides relaxation for college students. It is a time for backyard BBQs, pool parties, weddings, and unstructured downtime unfortunately these all tend to be accompanied by alcohol. There are many ways to have a relaxing summer while maintaining sobriety. It can be important to stay in touch with your support network that can hold you accountable when you’re experiencing cravings or stress.
- Keep an organized and structured environment
- This does not mean that your summer plans will not be fun. You can have an hour scheduled for tanning by the pool and the next catching up with your favorite show.
- Create your own Event
- Host your own BBQ or another summer time event where you are in control of what is served and what the environment looks like
- Bring a friend who will leave early with you from parties or events, stay sober with you, or just be there for you in general times of need.
- -Discover local attractions that are welcoming to sober people! Here are some suggestions: learn about outdoor hobbies, engage in novel pursuits like a new skill such as fishing or how to drive a boat or play a new sport, or develop mindfulness techniques.
- -Baking
- -Reading or writing
- -Painting
- -Backpacking
- -Concerts or festivals
- -Sports
- When you’re on vacation or in transit, you might be reminded of former drug-using acquaintances or memories. You could be enticed to go see these pals or go back to these old haunts to see how far you’ve come. However, the risk to your recovery is not worth it. It’s quite acceptable to turn down invitations to hang together or go to events that might be upsetting.
- Instead, while out and about in the summer, you can create new connections. In sober settings, a lot of people are looking for new friends. Try to establish relationships with the individuals you meet as you engage in a new interest or activity so that you can make fresh memories.
