The end of the semester is very close, and it is almost time to submit final grades. This list will help you make sure that Canvas can calculate your final grades accurately.
Select your grading scheme
The grading scheme lets Canvas know which letter grade your percentages correspond to. It also allows students to see their final letter grades. See this guide for instructions to enable your course grading scheme.
Make sure that Canvas can calculate the final grades for you
You might be using a series of graded discussions, quizzes, and exams as assessments in your course. By organizing these assignments into assignment groups, you can specify how much these groups contribute to the final grade. When set up properly, Canvas can calculate your final grades for you and weight the final course grade based on assignment groups.
What to do about missing or excused assignment
Canvas has a setting that lets you treat ungraded assignments as zero in the Gradebook, so you can see what final course grades are without needing to manually enter zeroes in every cell–a big time-saver in large classes.
You can exempt a student from an assignment so that it is not part of their final grade by entering EX in the gradebook cell.
Drop the lowest grade
Calculating final grades is not an easy task. Sometimes teachers allow their students to drop the lowest grade for some assignment groups. You can do so by creating a rule for dropping certain grades from calculations.
Extra credit
This can be complicated. If you would like to meet with a CITL consultant about extra credit, feel free to schedule an appointment with us. You can also view these detailed steps for giving extra credit.
Submit final the grades
You can submit final grades in two ways: Submit student grades via file upload or load final grades from Canvas to SIS grade roster. There are important steps to follow before you submit grades so be sure to read them before you submit final grades.
If you would help with submitting your final grades, sign up for one of our “One-on-one Canvas Help: Submitting Final Grades” sessions. As always, feel free to also contact us to set up an individual consultation.
