SUMMER 2025

Join us in Music City for an undergraduate research opportunity this summer! The goal of the summer program is to introduce students to the excitement and importance of research in chemical biology, from chemical synthesis and drug development, to sensors, structural biology, and natural product discovery. Students will choose from among several interdisciplinary projects and will be mentored by faculty in Chemistry. The program will also provide a mix of educational and professional development resources throughout the summer.

Program Highlights:

• The 10-week program runs from May 27th to August 1st.
• A summer stipend of $7,000 will be granted to each student.
• The REU program will arrange on-campus housing.
• Participants will work under the mentorship of faculty members, alongside graduate students and senior research associates. Students work in state-of-the-art laboratory spaces.
• A variety of activities have been arranged for the summer participants:
  – Bi-weekly lunch seminars with chemistry faculty
  – Weekly professional development seminars
  – Final research symposium and poster session
  – Social activities with other Vanderbilt summer students. Previous events have included: ice cream social, caving research trip, Jack Daniels distillery tour, and dinner following the symposium.

Science Looks Good on Anyone (SLGA) is an interdisciplinary club for students from all majors and levels of study with an interest in science, education, and outreach. We focus on encouraging interest in STEM fields while building community and mentorship among club members. Throughout the year, we host a variety of fun events, including a series of club-member-led labs at Bloomington North High School in the spring.

We are now in the process of planning our spring program at the high school and will need lots of volunteers to help test and facilitate the labs! We’ll be holding an info session next Wednesday, February 12th at 4:00pm in person at the IMU Club Hub to discuss upcoming opportunities. Students from all academic fields and backgrounds are welcome; no experience is required!

I am writing to remind you about the Department of Energy and American Chemical Society sponsored Nuclear and Radiochemistry Summer School Application Deadline. We kindly ask that you continue to share this amazing opportunity with your colleagues, departments and undergraduate students and encourage them to apply!

Students receive an all-expense paid opportunity to complete a 6-week intensive summer course (June 16, 2025 – July 25, 2025) in Nuclear Chemistry and Radiochemistry in either California at San Jose State University or New York at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Selected students also receive a stipend of $4,000 for the 6-week program ($666/ week) and the program will pay for student travel and housing for the duration of the program. In addition, students also earn hours (tuition paid) of undergraduate chemistry credit through either San Jose State University or Stony Brook University.

The deadline for applications has been extended to February 13th, 2025.

STEM Summer Research Program

The IUUR STEM Summer Research Program was started in Summer 2021 to provide undergraduate students with an on-campus, residential research opportunity while adhering to campus safety guidelines related to COVID-19. The Summer 2025 program will have a focus on interdisciplinary research.

Dates:

• The program will run for eight weeks, June 2 – July 25, 2025.
• Students will be expected to participate fully without other course or work obligations during this time unless they receive approval from program director.

Details:

• The program aims to increase participation in STEM disciplines among student populations that are traditionally underrepresented in STEM. Women, first generation, students from historically excluded racial and ethnic groups, and students with high financial need are encouraged to apply.
• Participants will receive a $2700 stipend and will be provided on-campus housing at no cost for the duration of the eight-week program.
• Participants will receive a meal stipend which will cover some but not all meals during the program.
• Participants will work in small groups of 4-6 students with a graduate student, faculty, or post-doc mentor guiding their research.
• Research will take place in research groups across campus. Some components of the program may take place remotely as needed.

Eligibility

• Must be a currently enrolled IUB student pursuing a STEM-related degree with an anticipated graduation date no earlier than December 2025.

Advanced Summer Research Scholarships

IU Undergraduate Research provides Advanced Summer Research Scholarships to help undergraduate researchers spend their summers undertaking original research or creative projects.

Students in any field are eligible to apply, but must meet the following requirements:

• All applicants must have a well-developed project plan and a faculty mentor who has agreed to supervise the project.
• Applicants must not be receiving other sources of funding or earning academic credit for their summer research or creative project.
• Seniors may not apply for funding projects that take place the summer following graduation.
• Past recipients of this scholarship are eligible to apply a second time.  However, priority is given to first time recipients.

Award amounts vary based on availability of funding and project time commitment, but the maximum award is $3,500.

Applications must include the following:

1. A cover letter describing the applicant’s motivation, prior research experiences, and qualifications for carrying out the proposed project.
2. An overview (2-3 pages) of the proposed research or creative activity project, including: a) project title; b) background information; c) research questions; d) overview of methodology/approach; e) timeline for completing the project, including estimated hours applicant will commit to the project over the summer; and
   f) description of products (such as poster, draft of article, screenplay) to be completed by end of summer.
3. A statement of support from a faculty mentor that includes an endorsement of the proposed research project and estimated hours the applicant will commit to the project over the summer. This letter can be included with application materials or emailed directly to uroffice@iu.edu.

Applicants will be evaluated on a) the quality, feasibility, and significance of their proposed projects and b) their preparedness to carry them out, as demonstrated in the cover letter and faculty support.

Application deadline:  The application deadline is 11:59 PM on Sunday, March 23, 2025. Applicants will be notified of the outcome in early April.

If you have any students interested in sustainability, but courses don’t fit into their plan of study for whatever reason (or sustainability students that want more sustainability – that’s fine too!), I wanted to make you aware of the Campus Sustainability Implementation Series.

The Office of Sustainability is continuing our non-credit, extracurricular education series on sustainability implementation. It’s a semester long series that includes tours and a variety of sustainability topics (see here for the full list and meeting details). The lectures discuss the process of implementing sustainability solutions and the tours showcase them in action and/or highlight some of the challenges of implementation. Our first session is today, Jan 24.

We do offer an e-badge if participants attend 10 of 14 sessions, but I do want to highlight that this is purely extracurricular at this point (no credits, no associated costs, no long-term commitment).

We are excited to share the NSF-supported Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Mississippi State University, focused on Food, Energy, and Water Security. This ten-week summer program offers students the chance to work with a faculty mentor on renewable energy research, covering biofuel production, biochar applications, and wastewater purification.

Participants will receive a $6,000 stipend, housing and meals, and travel support for this 10-week summer program beginning May 27, 2025. We welcome applications from undergraduates who have completed at least their freshman year and are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Please encourage your students—especially those interested in environmentally focused research—to apply by February 15, 2025, using this link. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on research experience and professional skills.
