HPSC X223 The Strange History of Alchemy: Gold, God, and Secrets
(Second Eight Weeks Course: MW 1:15 PM–3:45 PM)
Instructor: William Newman
Have you ever wondered if there was anything to alchemy, or if it was nothing but mumbo jumbo designed to entrap the unwary and extract their gold? Did you know that some of the greatest scientists of history were also alchemists, including Robert Boyle and Isaac Newton? Or that Boyle, the “father of modern chemistry,” thought that he could attract angels by means of the alchemical philosophers’ stone? Alchemists even tied to make an artificial human being called a “homunculus,” which was said to have superpowers. And what are we to think of alchemy’s contemporary influence on literature, music, the visual arts, and even graphic novels? “The Strange History of Alchemy” will deal with all these topics and more in the often weird but always fascinating history of this obscure field, long considered an outlier in the history of science but now given a central place in its chronological development. In-class demonstrations of selected alchemical processes will be carried out in order to show that alchemists were not just writing and daydreaming, but actually working with their hands.

About our instructors:
LISA CONNOLLY (Psychology, Sociology and Statistical Reasoning): Dr. Lisa L. Connolly is a Professor at Ivy Tech Community College in Bloomington, Indiana. She completed a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Indianapolis in 2010. Dr. Connolly completed a master’s degree in counseling and holds an LMHC (licensed mental health counselor) license in the State of Indiana and has over 20 years of experience working with people with significant behavioral challenges. Moving into academia has allowed her to focus on her first love of teaching both in the classroom and at conferences at the local and national level. Her areas of research interest are in gerontology, youth work and marginalized populations of people.
LEANDRO FOSQUE (Physics): I received my bachelor’s degree in Astrophysics with a minor in Mathematics from Rutgers University, and graduated with honors (Magna Cum Laude). I also obtained my Masters from IU. I worked on different areas of physics and math during my undergrad years as well during my graduate years. Now, I’m working on establishing fundamental principles in brain dynamics. This can establish the base for a theory of the brain. I also have been tutoring and teaching a wide range of physics and astronomy classes during my years at IU. Outside of research, I play tango in a band (classical guitar), and I like to play tennis and martial arts. On the little free time left, I like to try to cook different types of food and read some nice literature.
BEN GREULICH (Biology): Ben received his B.S. in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Animal Behavior from Indiana University. He is currently a Ph.D candidate in the Cell, Molecular, and Cancer Biology program of the Medical Sciences department at IU. He has taught various biology courses, including Introductory Biology, Ornithology, and Human Anatomy. In addition to these courses, he has also tutored high school and university students in biology and chemistry for the past two years. His current research focuses on further understanding the regulation of the oncogenic transcription factor, ERG, in prostate cancer in attempts to develop targeted therapeutics.
ZOE PETTLER (Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills): Zoe Pettler is a graduate student pursuing her PhD in Philosophy as well as her JD. She has achieved high scores on the GRE and LSAT, and has extensive experience teaching reading and writing as well as tutoring graduate level test prep. Zoe enjoys working with students of a variety of backgrounds and ages to help them meet their goals.
ZACHARY TAYLOR (Chemistry & Biochemistry): I have both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Chemistry, from Middle Tennessee State University. I am currently a PhD candidate in the Chemistry Department specializing in Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology. My current research is focused on the development of fluorescent and fluorogenic probes for investigating peptidoglycan biosynthesis and Hepatis B Virus capsid assembly. I have been tutoring/teaching undergraduate chemistry since 2014.
