CEES Presents Poster at Joseph Taylor Symposium
The Center for Earth and Environmental Science’s Robert Lugg presented a poster, “Translating Research Into Action Through Environmental Stewardship in Central Indiana Communities” at the 24th annual Joseph Taylor Symposium last Wednesday.
Taste-and-Odor Compounds in Drinking Water Supplies
CEES will attend the next Annual Indiana Lakes Management Society Conference on March 22-23, 2013 at Pokagon State Park in Angola, IN. Staff scientist Nicolas Clercin will present on Taste-and-Odor occurences in a Central Indiana water supply reservoir (Eagle Creek Reservoir) associated with resident blue-green algae.
Using LIDAR to improve fluvial erosion hazard (FEH) mapping
A major source of flood losses is damage to roads, bridges, and other infrastructure caused by fluvial or river erosion – where flood waters erode stream and river banks or even change course – shifting where they flow across the landscape.
Over 250 Students Involved in CEES Service Learning Last Semester
This fall, over 250 undergraduate students participated in eight service learning projects to enhance six local natural areas and protect central Indiana water resources within the Upper White River Watershed.
FEH Presentations
Our first scheduled FEH presentation this year is at the Ohio River Basin Alliance Spring 2013 Conference (March 26-27) in Louisville, KY. This is the FEH team’s first appearance at this forum and we are pleased to be part of the conference.
Pleasant Run Update
The CEES team is preparing to survey new channel cross-sections for the Pleasant Run Stream Corridor Naturalization Project to monitor how the channel and floodplain are developing.
Spring 2013 Educational Outreach: Out and About
CEES educational outreach staff members and Discovering the Science of the Environment’s popular watershed model will be attending the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township’s March 7 Math and Science Community Fair as well as the March 15 and 16 Indiana Going Green Festival at the Indiana State Museum.
Spring Service Learning to Begin in March
Our Spring 2013 service learning event dates have been set for March and April. Service learning coordinator and graduate student, Amy Smith, has arranged eight events in our local parks and greenspaces.
DSE Developing New Curriculum
Discovering the Science of the Environment staff are currently developing program extension kits that follow from DSE programs Ecosystem Investigation and Chemical Water Quality Assessment. The kit development and materials are funded by a Dow Promise grant, from Dow AgroSciences.
