Out of all of the skills he has gained, the most valuable are teamwork and social perceptiveness. In his words, they “have aided me in communicating effectively amongst both peers and my supervisors.” While he doesn’t know what he wants to be doing in 10 years, Zach plans on expanding his horizons and living a well-rounded life through many different fields of experience.

Motivational Monday: “The secret to getting ahead…”
Happy MLK Day! What’s on your to-do list today? Maybe that English assignment that you’ve been putting off or possibly rewarding yourself with a Netflix marathon of Grey’s to give you all the feels? Hope you enjoy your day!
Working Wednesday: Alexander Collins
Alexander Collins is a freshman majoring in nursing. He currently works at the Fine Arts Library, where he has strengthened his communication and teamwork skills. In his own words, these skills will help him in his future career because “people in the nursing field use team work to save patients every day, and they have to have great communication between each other to keep patients alive.” Alexander dreams of working as a nurse—but not just any kind of nurse! He hopes to become a travel nurse, a career that will enable him to help patients around the world. He looks forward to his future but also loves being a part of the Fine Arts Library team!
Motivational Mondays: “You are never too old…”
When you set your mind to it, you are capable of anything! It’s a New Year, IU. Go make the best of it!!!
Motivational Monday: “Motivation will almost always…”
Certain things just come naturally to some people. We all have known that person who comes to a few classes, doesn’t spend time at the library, but somehow does miraculously well on papers and presentations because of their amazing charisma. Don’t be discouraged because most of us are not that “lucky,” and that’s not really the type student to desire to be in the first place. You want to work hard to really build the skills necessary to succeed in your future career.
Highly regarded actor Will Smith even said, “I’ve never viewed myself as particular talented, but where I excel is ridiculous, sickening work ethic. You know, while the other guy’s sleeping, I’m working. While the other guys’ eating, I’m working…your talent is going to fail you if you’re not skilled…”
So maintain motivation, continue to do good work. Those skills are going to reward you far more than raw talent.
Working Wednesday: Ryan Sturm
Ryan Sturm is a freshman management student who works at the IU Auditorium’s box office. She feels that through this job, she has improved her skills in time management and prioritizing multiple tasks. In addition, her interpersonal skills are also expanding, as she puts it, “work[ing] a lot with different types of people garners a lot of person skills. Service-orientation is key because you have to pick up on the cues patrons give you–whether or not they are pleased with your service, for example.” One of Ryan’s favorite things about her job is that she works with great people, so work doesn’t always feel like work! In 10 years, she plans on having not only a bachelor’s degree, but also a master’s degree and being financially secure in a large corporate job.
