Good afternoon, IU! We hope you’re enjoying this wonderful weather and to all you student workers, that you felt appreciated this week. Today, we are proud to announce the IU Student Employee and the IU Student Employer winners!
Our student employee winner, Byron Gurzo works for the Campus Bus Service and when asked why he got the award, his employer had this to say about him:
“Byron started a bus driver trainee at the beginning of the Fall Semester 2016. He completed his training program before Thanksgiving Break and immediately jumped in to pick up open work assignments. During the Spring Semester he was able to pick 52 regular work assignments. More impressively, he has already picked up 19 substitutions for other bus drivers. He has more substitutions than any of our other temporary employees, including even the non-student temporary employees! He is working so many hours this semester that we had to ask for and got approved a Seasonal Exemption to the 29 hour limit on work per week.
We wish we had several more student employees like Byron.”
Talk about a great employee, right? Sheesh, we want him over here in our office! But on the other side, Courtney Schwerin nominated the IU Athletics Ticket Office and they won! Courtney had this to say about her employer:
“I have worked in the ticket office in Simon Skodjt Assembly Hall for about a year and a half now, and it has been an amazing experience. I plan on staying another year and a half until I graduate, and even then it will be sad to say goodbye. All of the full time employees are kind and understanding, and very willing to answer questions that will aid professional development outside of the ticket office. I appreciate the fact that even though there are around 70 student workers in the fall, the full time staff makes an effort to get to know each of us on an individual basis.”
We are so proud of all you student workers and, as a student employer, we can tell you we appreciate what you do! Your work doesn’t go unnoticed and we enjoy working with you. Thank you all for a great week! Enjoy the weekend.

IU, we’d like to introduce you to Sophomore Kayla Kocal. She’s double majoring in Finance and Real Estate AND on top of all that, she’s got an internship!
Kayla works for DistinXion, A Zeller Family Program as a Junior Leader. Her job entails lots of teamwork, personal motivation (because it’s a volunteer based job), and multi-tasking. The number of projects Kayla works on is incredible, and she also makes time to help her colleagues out, too.
“The staff dynamic at DistinXion is amazing,” Kayla tells us. She says her co-workers have become a work family and they make going to work enjoyable.
But Kayla doesn’t plan on staying with DistinXion forever. After graduation, Kayla sees herself moving to a city and having a job which allows her to travel. But for a bigger picture plan, she dreams of being the CFO of Nike. She’ll get there through hard work and determination and being herself!
We can’t wait to see what you have planned for the financial world, Kayla! Good luck!
