Christian Luna is a sophomore in the Media School majoring in Media and minoring in Sports Media. But, he’s also a part-time student worker for Menards as one of their morning stockers!
Working for Menards enables Christian to work on his teamwork and service orientation skills.
“I work with different kinds of people each day that either help me complete tasks I wouldn’t be able to on my own or vice versa. [And] since I work in retail, I’m always helping guests find the items they need.”
And we can tell you from experience that retail really does teach you valuable transferable skills! Christian is gaining important usable skills, but he also enjoys working for Menards. His co-workers are great and work is always giving him a “different perspective and angle” on the things he does.
After Christian graduates, he plans on going immediately into the work force, so his transition into the media industry is as seamless as possible. His dream job is to “work in Bristol, Connecticut or LA for ESPN as a production hand.”
We have no doubt that the Media School will prepare you well and you’ll be making a splash in the Media industry before you know it.
Good luck!

Hoosiers, this is Lilly Donahue. Lilly Donahue, these are the Hoosiers.
Lilly is a freshman studying International Studies and she’s working for the Center of the Study of the Middle East (CSME).
In her job as an hourly assistant Lilly is working to improve her organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills. In her own words, she’s learning “a lot about project management” because at CSME the staff plans all events. Also, her duties include management of both the center’s email and website so organization is a must. Finally, Lilly’s interpersonal skills have developed through interactions over email, on the phone, and in person!
It’s true Lilly is gaining valuable transferable skills, but she is also having a good time working.
“What I really enjoy about CSME is the ability to provide input on our events. Our director is happy to listen to what staffers propose for possible events … This allows me to help put on events about topics I am passionate about.”
The experience Lilly is getting from her job and her studies are preparing her for her dream job: President of the United States of America. She’s always been interested in politics and being POTUS would be incredible. Before she steps into the Oval, though, Lilly plans on starting small by running for office or working in a government department. In the more immediate future, Lilly wants to go to grad or law school then moving to DC, after she graduates.
We can’t wait to see your name on the ticket, Lilly! Good luck!

Hayley Curtsinger is a freshman majoring in Human Development & Family Studies and minoring in Spanish. She works for the Association of College Unions International as a Merchandise Assistant.
At her job, Hayley works on her active listening, communication, instruction, organization, and a few other skills. But most importantly, she is working on her adaptability.
“I have learned how to take instruction and effectively utilize it in my work.”
So as you can see, Hayley is learning a lot but she also enjoys her job. She loves the people she works with and honestly enjoys being able to help out.
While Hayley is only a freshman, she’s got big plans for her future. Her dream job is “to be an occupational therapist … travelling around the world advocating for children with disabilities.” But in her more immediate future, she sees herself having a successful career, living in the city in a cozy apartment, with a cute dog.
Who doesn’t want a cute dog? We know we do, and we’re sure Hayley will make it around the world quite a few times. Good luck!

Hoosiers, meet a fellow student and member of the IUPD: Ryan Kovacik!
He’s a freshman studying Human Resource and Management, but when he isn’t studying his textbooks, he’s out on the street learning how to keep us safe.
While on the job, Ryan is working on nearly every transferable skill in the books: teamwork, leadership, personal motivation, active listening, communication, personal development, complex problem solving, multi-tasking, social perceptiveness, interpersonal skills, planning, and MANY more.
Ryan explains why he chose every skill: “In the field of law enforcement, you really do develop and refine those skills every time you go to work. I have to take control of chaos, get people to communicate with me, be aware of my surroundings, keep myself motivated and squared away, and always remain professional.” So as you can see, there’s much more to being an IUPD cadet than just patrolling our campus.
Hands down, no buts about it, Ryan loves his job because he loves helping people.
“No other campus job allows me to go out and ensure the community’s safety and well-being quite like the IUPD.”
One day, Ryan would like to work for the FBI or maybe even Immigration and Customs Enforcement! But more immediately, after he graduates, Ryan sees himself working for a small police department until his time with a federal agency comes.
Thank you for all you do, Ryan! We have no doubt that someone of your passion and abilities will do great things!
