Conventional wisdom might judge an education degree to have little in common with a business degree; however, both contribute to development of leadership, communication, and project management skills, with a good amount of math and science training to prepare the future generation. Sari Factor, Vice Chair & Chief Strategy Officer at Imagine Learning, studied education and went on to get her MBA. She found that she could have an even greater impact outside the classroom: “I have worked in all aspects of K-12 publishing, educational software, and services — from product development, marketing, sales and general management. I believe that I have helped more students through this work than I ever could have by teaching.”
Similar career outcomes: students with a bachelor’s degree in business and students from the IU School of Education boast similar job placement rates. In the last three years, Kelley graduates have enjoyed a career outcome rate (essentially those who found work, a graduate program, or service program) of 97.1%, while education graduates reached 99.3%.
Education comes in many shapes and forms, and not everyone who graduates with an education degree will go on to teach in the classroom. This is part of the reason why the School of Education added a new major, Counseling and Student Services, in 2020.
Surveying education alumni from 2015 to 2020 found that, of those who were employed but not teaching, many ended up in business-related positions, including human resources, management, finance, and marketing.
Many alums teach and then go on to have success in business and other fields. A 2022 Forbes article found that teachers commonly made their second careers in education technology, corporate training, and office and project management, among other things.
David Dimmett, President and CEO of Project Lead the Way, studied education at IU and went on to get his MBA. He shared his thoughts with us about the value of education on leadership growth: “The better leaders understand how others learn and grow personally and professionally, the better prepared those leaders are to help members of their teams and organizations reach their full potential.”
