College in a pandemic. Adjusting to a new normal. Living through history. Will you please put your mask over your nose? These are just a few of the things we are all hearing on a daily basis if not multiple times per day. While this year has proved to be better than last year in a number of ways, COVID is still here and affecting the ways we live our lives. It’s times like these that we all need to remember to turn inward and make sure we are giving ourselves more slack and more love. “Self-care” I think is another term that could be listed in the beginning of this paragraph as a phrase I am almost getting tired of hearing in its vagueness and subjectivity. What is self-care to you?
Recently, I have had to do a lot of reading for my internship with the A&H Council and for a few classes I have been taking. From a young age, I have been an avid reader, and this small push of mandatory reading has brought me tumbling back to that age. My bookshelf is filling up again and I am ripping through books at an alarming rate, just as 12-year-old me would. In this weird ‘in between’ year, reading has become my new version of self-care. It used to be cooking or listening to music or watching movies, all of which I still enjoy, but now nothing beats flipping open to my bookmark and sinking back into the blissful escape reading provides.
