Just to remind you all, my field of study is graphic design, but I’m intrigued with all art practices and the overlapping similarities they have in common; for example, shape, line, color, etc. A prominent figure I recently came across and became fascinated with is a Polish, female graphic designer and art director under the name @wedzicka on social media. Her full name is Martyna Wędzicka-Obuchowicz and she lives in Gdansk, Poland. I found her art account on Instagram when I was scrolling through my discovery page, where I occasionally come across underground artists from various sectors. I am always intrigued when I find an underground artist, especially when they reside from countries outside of the United States and they are women.
I was particularly fascinated with her spunky artistic style because it reminds me of my own with bold colors, geometric shapes, and hidden messaging. Wedzicka deconstructs and visually manipulates various visual elements, creating head-turning posters reminiscent of glitch art. She constantly thinks outside of the box in terms of composition and material which emphasizes her bold, intricate style. She’s held workshops and talked at over 12 events, primarily outside of the United States and she was also nominated Designer Of The Year at the Polish Graphic Design Awards Competition, with an honorable mention in visual identity. Her art is exquisite, has intention, is profound, and will remain relevant as our world transitions into the digital era of 2021. Wedzicka is prominent to me because of her unique art style and although she only has a few honorable mentions so far, she is still a new big inspiration of mine.
