When people think of 2020, I am sure they think of all the plans and goals they had for the year that inevitably fell through because of the coronavirus pandemic. I decided to have the same resolutions for 2021, as I gave up on them in March of 2020. My resolution list was very simple: become more involved and make healthy choices.
Involved
My first year at IU, I was not involved in as many clubs and groups. I was still trying to gain familiarity on campus and figure out what exactly I wanted to focus on. I decided this is the year to become more involved, even if it is virtually. I have become more comfortable and self-confident this past year, and joining various clubs has helped! Tiny Dorm Concerts has become the one group I will dedicate my life to. The community that I found in Tiny Dorm Concerts is something I never thought I would find on campus and supporting local artists is very important! I look forward to the day the pandemic is done and I can support local musicians here in Bloomington.
Healthy Choices
By healthy choices, I do not mean healthy food. I truly wish I could love healthy food and just enjoy vegetables, but bread and chocolate is my weakness. I have found that healthy choices mean, less hours on social media, more walks outside, and reading more books. When the pandemic first hit and the election came around, all I would do was doom scroll through social media. While I do love the memes on Twitter, scrolling through social media every hour was not healthy for me. I have used the time instead to go on walks outside and read books! I usually take a 30 minute walk every few days with my dogs. Listening to classical music and pretending to run away from a ball is a great motivation to take longer walks. Over the break, I went to Barnes and Noble every week because I was reading a book a day. Doing these three simple things have helped me to become more healthy mentally. I enjoy taking a break from the real world to listen to music and lose myself in a literature wonderland.
This year, I am not setting any goals. I do not want to be disappointed when the goals and events I plan for are inevitably not completed. I am planning on taking this year day by day and focusing on the small things I can do to get through this unpredictable time.
