This year has definitely been full of ups and downs. There have been some extreme highs and lows for everyone. I think we can all agree that we are ready to put this year in the books and move on. Before we say goodbye to 2020, I wanted to look back at some of the things I am proud of from this year.
First, of course, I have just finished my thesis work for my Painting BFA. I have anticipated this moment for years, and now that it’s finally here, it feels very different from what I expected. Without the in-person hanging of work and the excitement of an opening or closing reception, it almost doesn’t feel real. I have done all the physical work and the shows are up, but it doesn’t have the huge exciting ending to it all like I had originally thought. I do feel a sense of accomplishment and relief now that I don’t have the pressure of painting constantly. It’s also been very nice to hear from people online who have looked at the work. I can now look forward to making new work and exploring things I couldn’t while creating a whole body of paintings. I am very proud of all the work I have done with my art this year.
Another thing to reflect on is my growth as a person this year. After going through quarantine and all the stress of the year, I have started to learn more about myself. I now know how to cope with things better and am working on treating myself more gently. I’m learning to give myself space and take breaks when I need to. I’m developing deeper relationships with my friends and colleagues. If this year has taught me anything, it’s how to treat others and myself with more respect and kindness. Seeing everything we have gone through as a society, I think we could all learn to be better about this.
Overall, this year has taught me a lot and has given me a new perspective on things. I think next year will be brighter for all of us. We have a lot to look forward to, and I can’t wait to see what good 2021 brings.
