This semester is off to a much different start than usual, with the campus arts and humanities community’s typical host of shows, lectures, and performances either virtual or modified. But the beauty of the arts and humanities is how adaptable we can be when presented with the constraints of Covid and social distancing. This Thursday, for example, the Arts & Humanities Council will be holding our usual First Thursday festival—except it’ll be spread out over a large swath of campus as a trail.
This adaptability and flexibility under external limitations extends to you and your creative practice, whether you consider yourself an artist, musician, or simply an avid fan of the arts. Beyond that, though, getting in touch with your emotions, moving your body, and flexing your creative muscles will do you some good as you take on your classes. In short: making things makes for happy humans.
To assist you with getting in touch with your creative self, we’ve assembled an Arts & Humanities Creativity Kit. Inside the kit, you’ll find a canvas, paints, a notebook, watercolors, a pen, maps to guide you off-campus and into Bloomington in a safe and responsible way (one features all the outdoor art you can spot around town!), and a deck of creative prompts from us and other members of the IU arts and humanities community. We’ve tried to include all the aspects of well-being, so the kit will ask you to create, share, reflect, explore, and express as you work your way through its activities. Alternately, you can do whatever the heck you want with the materials inside the kit—we just want you to find a creative outlet! (But we think you’ll like the prompts. They’re kinda fun.)
Pick up a Creativity Kit at one of the Home Base locations at the First Thursday Trail on September 3 from 3-6 p.m. The Home Base(s) are located in the Arboretum, the Arts Plaza, and the Conrad Prebys Amphitheater. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!
