As we approach the end of the semester and finals week, finding ways to relax seems to have become even more difficult than usual. By the time my classes and work are done for the day, I find myself wanting to do something relaxing, but still fun in my free time. So I found myself looking for video games that don’t require too much thought but were still engaging to play. The first game I strongly recommend is the widely popular Stardew Valley. In this game, you are a farmer tasked with restoring your grandfather’s old farm back to its former glory and helping the town of Stardew develop. This game can become very complex, however you can also just focus on your farm, mining, or fishing. The ambiance and music in the game also is very calming and the game overall provides a simple way to relax.
Next, I recommend Untitled Goose Game. This game became pretty popular as a meme a year or so ago and overall it is a pretty interesting game to play. In the game itself, you play as a goose who goes around causing trouble and messing with people. It is pretty fun to just chase people around, honk at them, and steal their stuff, however the game does have some story and missions to follow so you don’t get bored. The simplistic art and nature of the game makes for an entertaining but relaxing time.
Finally, Katamari Damacy Reroll is a remake of a Japanese game that came out on the PS4 back in 2004 and it is still just as fun to play as the original was. In this game, you play as a prince whose father, the king of the universe, accidentally destroys all the stars and moons so you have to go around the world and clean up his mess in order to fix it. Basically, you go around rolling up a ball of objects, slowly picking up larger and larger objects as you go, and building a huge ball of objects to pass each level. Overall it is very cathartic to just roll the ball around and watch it steadily grow into this giant mass of objects.
These games are great for when you want something to do but don’t want to think too much. If these games aren’t your cup of tea or you don’t have the game system they are on, there are so many other relaxing and fun games out there to play either on consoles or on PC that can help you destress as we approach finals.
