With the pandemic still being a serious issue in 2021, making a New Year’s resolution was a bit different than usual. Rather than the resolutions in the past that I had made about trying new activities or traveling, this year I examined my life at home and decided to improve my cooking skills and make new foods that I have never eaten before. Previously my cooking skills consisted of mostly the basic, easy-to-make foods such as pancakes or pasta, so in the new year I buckled down on buying some cookbooks and searching for new, interesting recipes online to try out. So far this year I have made a variety of dishes such as a crispy shrimp rice bowl with Sriracha aioli and a Korean spicy vegetable stir-fry. Both dishes were something I would have never eaten in the past, however, I found myself quite liking the challenge of cooking and I ended up really liking the recipes!
The reason why I choose to learn how to cook more dishes for my New Year’s resolution (and why I recommend it for others as well!) is that because of the pandemic we are all at home much more than usual. With being home so much, it is much harder to stay active and healthy in our day-to-day lives and the lack of activity can lead to fatigue and other problems. Little things such as cooking healthy foods more often can really help us all stay healthy during this time as well as learning to cook is an invaluable skill that is always useful. I recommend this resolution for anyone who wants to try new foods, eat/live healthier, or just gain a new hobby. Whether you try making completely new dishes you’ve never had before or just learn how to make more dishes with your favorite foods in it, I hope that cooking can help you stay healthy and happy during these stressful times.
