The All Campus Orchestra (ACO) is open to all IU students, regardless of major, who wish to continue in music making throughout their collegiate years. Orchestra members meet once a week and perform a formal concert at the end of each semester. The orchestra does not meet during the summer.
When does ACO meet?
Rehearsals are Mondays from 7:15-8:45pm in MC 070. There is a final dress rehearsal and concert at the end of the semester that will be indicated in the course syllabus. ACO usually performs on the stage of the Musical Arts Center (MAC) each semester.
Who can join?
Currently, anybody that plays a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, or double bass) may enroll without an audition! We’re always in need of more string players, so the more the merrier!
I play a wind, brass, or percussion instrument. Can I join?
Eventually, yes! We’re trying to open All Campus Orchestra up to include winds, brass, and percussion in the near future. If you’re interested in joining, please email us at allcampusorchestra.iu@gmail.com to express your interest! The more interest we have, the easier it will be to open up the ensemble in the future! For the Fall 2023 semester, however, we can only admit string players. Unfortunately, we cannot accept other, typically non-orchestral instruments (like guitar, piano, saxophone, or voice).
Do I need to be a fulltime student to join?
No! But you will need to enroll in the MUS X1 section for All Campus Orchestra. Because this is a listed course, all participants must be enrolled. Even IU staff members have joined before!
Does it cost money to join?
According to the One.IU class registration page, this ensemble is not included in tuition calculations.
How can I join?
Just log on to the Class Registration page on One.IU and enroll in the MUS X1 (12692) section for All Campus Orchestra! If you have any questions, feel free to direct them to the instructor by emailing allcampusorchestra.iu@gmail.com.
When can I join?
The sooner you join, the better! But even after the semester has started, it’s not too late to join. According to the IU Academic Calendar, the last date to submit an Add/Drop Request for Fall 2023 is September 24, 2023. The class must then be added by October 9, 2023. If it’s too late to add the class but you’re still interested in joining, contact the instructor by emailing allcampusorchestra.iu@gmail.com and we’ll see what we can do.
What do I need in order to participate?
You’ll need your instrument of choice along with any other necessary accouterments (violin, bow, case, rosin, mute, shoulder rest, chin rest, strings, etc.). If you do not have an instrument at this time, check out the IU Instrument Rental Office and see what they have available! Feel free to also contact us at allcampusorchestra.iu@gmail.com for help in getting an instrument. Besides this, bring yourself and the provided music!
