Randomized controlled trials may be the “gold standard,” but most of us don’t live in labs—we live in the real world. As Dr. Steve McKenzie, director of the Active Communities Research Collaborative, put it, when you leave the controlled environment, you often “have to sort of roll with the punches.” Observational research, he reminds us, “is not a causality thing,” yet it can still surface patterns that matter for coaching, programming, and future trials. In fall 2019, David Pierce, Ph.D., professor and chair of the department of tourism, event, and Sport Management at IU Indianapolis, launched a capstone class project that would soon tackle a national crisis: the shortage of sports officials. Inspired by a newspaper article, Pierce and his students used the human-centered design process to explore why so many officials were quitting — and why new ones weren’t lasting long. (more…)
Dr. Wayne Campbell from Purdue University opened the spring edition of the 2024-25 PAWI Seminar Series by sharing an insightful lecture on the complexities of protein intake and nutrition, especially in aging populations. Drawing on over 35 years of research, Dr. Campbell emphasized the importance of historical context in nutritional science. He outlined the differences between the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) — focused on specific nutrient amounts — and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which promote overall healthy eating patterns. Keith Naugle, Ph.D., AT., NSCA-CPT, kicked off the 2024-25 PAWI Seminar Series on October 18 by presenting his research on pitch counts in youth baseball at the NIFS Auditorium.
From a presentation entitled Pitch Counts: Interpretation, Correct Usage, and Recovery, which he gave at the Baseball Academics Midwest 2024 Coaches Clinic in August, Dr. Naugle talks about the impact of pitch counts on children in youth baseball and how to keep kids healthy. (more…)
