Here’s what our alumni had to say about being involved with something–anything–as an undergraduate student:
It is important to have diverse experiences in college to help you figure out what you want to do in your future. Going into college I thought I knew what I wanted to do after undergrad, but throughout the experiences that I had in undergrad, including LHSI, I realized that I wanted to do something else career wise after finishing school. It helped me realize what I wanted to do so I did not waste time and money on a master’s degree in something I would not have wanted.
Megan Gaunnac is currently an Operations Specialist at the IU Psychotic Disorders Program (IUPDP) and interned at LHSI with Dr. Radnovich/IUPDP during 2010-11.
Having diverse experiences in college is imperative! IUPUI has many opportunities to join organizations and take classes outside of your major. By doing so you’ll gain valuable skills, friendships, and be culturally in-tune.
Victoria Sefcsik is currently an Intern at the IU Health Pathology Department and interned at LHSI with Dr. Takagi during 2015-16.
As a freshman, I signed-up for the Peer Mentoring Program. My mentor happened to be Kami, who introduced me to Timmy Global Health. As a member of Timmy Global Health, I became a volunteer with the IU Student Outreach Clinic. By working at the clinic, I eventually became the clinic’s Registration Vice-Chair. I also became interested in what affects access to healthcare and other factors in society that can affect people’s and group’s health, which pushed me to major in Medical Sociology.Long story short, being in a mentoring program lead to me adding a sociology to my biology degree and becoming a board member to a free clinic!
It is important to have a diverse college experience because it helps to prepare you for the real world, and it helps you to gain the experience that can help you be successful in a diversified community. Everyday, we are always going to meet people that come from different parts of the world with different culture and different ideas, and been able to interact with these different types of people without disrespecting their cultural background and ideas is very crucial to one’s success in such community. Like I mentioned earlier, getting a diverse college experience prepares you for the real world, and there is no better feeling that working into a society knowing that you have all the tools and experiences required to be successful.
