For several years, University Division and OVPUE IT have collaborated on pre-registration of incoming students in English Composition courses using a system of scripts and Qualtrics surveys to determine which students still need English Composition, and which courses those students should take based on their test scores and interests.
This year, exploratory students were added to the pre-registration process, and OVPUE IT’s Applications Services team moved the Qualtrics English Composition process into a custom application to house both English and Exploratory students’ pre-registration tasks. We call the new tool “NSO Advising Tasks”.
This application serves as a single place where we can have students respond to all of the tasks they need to do prior to coming to New Student Orientation.
Keeping Groups Scholars in the loop
Since Groups scholars don’t use the standard FYE registration system, we weren’t able to look up their latest major selection the way we can with non-Groups students, so an additional task was added for Groups Scholars that allows them to indicate whether they are exploratory or not–if they are, we also show them the exploratory first courses task.
Next Steps for NSO Advising Tasks
Before Summer 2020, we hope to add a General Education task that allows students to indicate which GenEd areas they have already completed through ACP or AP test scores, then choose some courses of interest in each area with open seats during their first semester. This process should significantly improve students’ advising experiences on day 1 of NSO.
