This study explored the first and only known all black settlement in Orange County. It examines who brought them there and when, what was life like during settlement for the African
Americans and why those settlers left within 50 years of arriving. The methods used to find this information was searching through local archives and field research to identify the racial climate of the time of settlement through the time of abandonment. The methods used help to gain the overall political views of the county and state of Indiana. The findings would suggest that as time progressed, blacks were unwanted by the majority of their neighbors and the chance of being mistaken for a fugitive slave caused them to move further north.
