The emergence of periodical cicadas produces an influx of soil nitrogen availability that impacts the surrounding environment as they decompose. Because of the high volume of resources moving from below ground to above ground in such a short amount of time, impacts of such a large emergence could potentially be felt for years or even decades. Our lab is
studying how the resources provided by the Brood X emergence affects the surrounding area over the course of a year.
