Spent some time at Linton-Stockton working on prototype for a laser cut derby car (like pinewood derby smashed up with All American Soap Box Derby weight distribution experiment). This is a long, long project (just like things are the first time you try it).
4th graders will use Google Drawing to create the profile of their racer. We will laser cut those, and some insides that give it width and hold pennies (the weight distribution experiment). We will 3D print wheels. They will paint/decorate their profiles, assemble their cars, then race down a track. Adjustments can be made with pennies, hopefully. I worry that the weight of the wooden car (8 or 9 layers of 1/8″ mdf) will be so much that pennies have no effect.
Today we did some preliminary lasering.
The insides have grooves for rolls of pennies. There are 4 holes, 2 for axles and 2 to help align things during assembly (which will be using wood glue for each layer)
