The idea of gardening does not usually cross too many minds. Most say that “It’s too much work keeping up with a garden!” In reality, yes, gardening does have a little more than it seems, it the outcome is AWESOME. Working this summer in the famous garden, I learned a lot of new things. Along with assisting in the garden, there came joy and fun. Growing your own spices and vegetables saves more money then you may even realize. Not only did it save me money but anyone just taking a stroll through the campus could stop by and pick anything FOR FREE! Keeping the garden looking nice also attracts visitors.
I planned to make stepping stones during opening week of school for the garden. We will take a hand full of volunteers that are willing to help and use quikcrete to model the stepping stones.
I learned that keeping up with an unity garden like our own, could sometimes use a couple volunteers that would love to help. I came up with having a campus garden volunteer work day. Getting more people involved with working and learning about the techniques used to have a great garden is a goal I have set in mind. Giving a small reward for the event also helped bring people out. The reward was for the first 20 volunteers that arrived, FREE CHIPOTLE was given. If I could encourage more people to keep it green and sustain the future as much as possible, that would help. People are unaware of the things that are slowly destroying our Earth. I was myself at first, until Krista came talked with my biology class. Receiving just that small amount of information, I wanted to gain more knowledge about what it takes. Learning new things, then passing down what I know to someone else is what I want to do. You never know how something is until you have tried it yourself. That’s the biggest lesson I learned over the summer. Those nice summer days were very enjoyable for me in the garden, and not only did I enjoy them, but the turtles we had visiting enjoyed them as well 🙂
